Compass* is a sophisticated Internet bookmarking system that's easy to use and compatible with Netscape Navigator, MS Internet Explorer, and Opera. Windows Explorer-style windows make it easy to organize your bookmarks using drag-and-drop techniques to move between categories; a toolbar gives quick access to operations. Adding new bookmarks can be as simple as dragging and dropping links directly from your browser, or importing links from any of the three supported browser types. 23rdBrowser* is a handy slimware alternative in the browser wars. This modest Web browser is small, elegant, and has enough features to satisfy most surfing needs. Although it requires Internet Explorer 4.x as a foundation to deliver Web content and extras like Java and scripting, it adds some nice touches of its own. Features include a customizable favorites database you can store on a floppy (handy for shared machine environments); selectable home, search, and startup pages; and an IP address display for gaming and chat use. The browsers main selling point is an integrated Pop-up window filter. Options let you allow all, parent-only, or no sub windows. While 23rdBrowser would benefit from some polish and a bit of documentation, it's a nicely priced solution for everyday surfing. ----2-7-2000-C4U is a free Web browsing utility that does one thing and does it well -- it browses through your favorite sites and checks for any changes to links, images, email addresses, keywords, and text. With its clear and intuitive interface, and its reliable site-checking capabilities, it's one of the most appealing tools of its type that we've seen. To test C4U, we assigned it a test site, then changed some text on one of its pages. Sure enough, C4U notified us that our site had been modified (smiley face icon) and marked the updated text in red. FlySwat Unlike most search add-ons for Internet Explorer, which offer little more than links to branded content, Flyswat really boosts your Web searching powers. This freebie is well worth trying. Whenever you load a new page, flyswat analyses the entire contents and creates on-the-fly hyperlinks -- called "flycons" --for words and phrases it recognizes. Click a flycon and up pops a menu of categorized related links. For instance, a flycon for a company name might contain links to pages dealing with company info, stock quotes, major competitors, SEC filings, products, product reviews, and so on; a flycon for a medical term might include links to a definition, detailed information, related drugs, and recent articles. Flyswat also provides a search bar across the bottom of the browser window and a results list in the Explorer bar, but it's the flycons that really add depth and power to your Web searching. --added 2-8-2000-- The newest version of Netscape 4.72Communicator is here -- and it's better than ever.
