holes exploited by numerous viruses over the past 18 months. The patch

types, including Visual Basic Script (VBS) and object code (EXE). It's
a good first step, but by no means solves the problem, says Carey Nachenberg,

Selecting an item displays the particular message and either offers to cure the problem directly or sends you to a relevant Website. Along with showing the current time in analog format (complete with a sweep second hand of sorts), this versatile freebie can produce text-based reports that can track projects and system activity. It can also copy the current time and date to the Clipboard, plus offers multiple alarms and six timers. We really liked the alarm and timer functions, especially the method used to set them. Several customization options are provided. Zlurp!(2.23mb) Despite its funny sounding name, Zlurp! is a fairly serious solution for ripping CD tracks, encoding them to .mp3 or .wma format, and tagging them with full CDDB functionality -- and it's free. Zlurp! offers a clean-looking interface, includes the files necessary to change .wavs or CD tracks to .mp3 or .wma files, and -- despite its sparse documentation -- is easy to use. New Downloads: Jotter 2000 is a multifaceted, Internet-oriented system that performs a number of tasks to make your Web life easier. Its dockable toolbar has a crawl with a news feed that you select. Choose a single item to add to the ticker, or choose several that rotate, including weather, sports, stocks, news, and more. Jotter conducts Internet searches at many major search engines and provides access to a reminder system that can be used for appointments, birthdays, and so on. It also has a special talent for filling out Internet forms, with information such as name, address, credit card number, and email address, if the form uses conventional language. (You have to surrender your confidential information to Jotter to use this feature, but the program assures you that the info will remain confidential, encrypted in your computer.) Other features include multiuser support, a variety of security options, and an online tutorial. The system is fairly easy to use and offers a nice selection of conveniences. It's free but displays advertisements in the toolbar and in dialog boxes. SpotOn is a must-have Internet Explorer add-on for mobile users and for all those who want to organize their grab-bag of favorites into a really usable resource. This terrific freebie adds a button to your browser: click it to display the SpotOn bar where you can add bookmarks, rate each site, and create tours of related sites. SpotOn does two very smart things with your bookmarks. First, it pre-loads sites, so while you view the first page of a tour--say a selection of news and weather sites you like to check each morning--SpotOn loads the rest of the tour in the background. When you click the Next button, the next site in the tour loads almost instantly. Second, SpotOn stores your favorites on its servers. That means you can access your favorites from any computer connected to the Internet. It also means you can design public tours and share them with others via the Web. In addition, it inserts information about your contacts automatically; can prepare a letter template for you, with the proper addresses filled in for "snail mail" letters; and can import/export data from and to several popular formats. It checks your mail account at specified intervals and can send different responses or no response depending on the filters you set. It can even delay the response for an hour or more. After a response is sent, the email address is put in a database and can be exported to an address book or list server. It can also remove the messages from the server if certain criteria are met. This makes Autoresponder a nice anti-spam program as well. All activities are logged so you can see how many responses were sent, where they went, and what messages were deleted. April 10, Monday- 3:49 pm CST- New Downloads: Aureate Group Mail lets you quickly send mass email messages. Its simple, fill-in-the-blanks setup means you'll have it operating in just a few minutes, and its well-designed interface makes usage a snap. The program is self-contained -- it stores recipients' names in its own database and has a message editor with a spelling checker. You can set up multiple groups for mailings, with 32,000 names in each group, and even keep track of messages you've sent. Recipient information is suppressed, so your mailing list stays private. Email addresses from other sources can also be imported into the database. Other options include inline HTML support, personalized messages, data merge, and message previewing. It has a slick, simple to use interface and offers high audio quality. You can use buddyPhone in conjunction with Mirabilis' ICQ, and all of your ICQ contacts will automatically appear in your call menu. ICQ is not required, however, and buddyPhone is a full-featured call management system in its own right. It can auto-answer, block calls, and much more - it can even work as an answering machine. You make calls by connecting directly to another user's IP address (buddyPhone includes an amenity that will tell you what your IP address is so other users can contact you). Alternatively, buddyPhone can use an email address, and try to resolve the user's IP from there. The program offers some nice graphical options as well; you can set to stay on top of all open windows, use different "skins" to change the look of the program, and more. April 7, Friday- 3:47 pm CST- New Downloads: Updated: C4U 1.2b is a free Web browsing utility that does one thing and does it well -- it browses through your favorite sites and checks for any changes to links, images, email addresses, keywords, and text. With its clear and intuitive interface, and its reliable site-checking capabilities, it's one of the most appealing tools of its type that we've seen. To test C4U, we assigned it a test site, then changed some text on one of its pages. Sure enough, C4U notified us that our site had been modified (smiley face icon) and marked the updated text in red. You can filter site checking for each type of change by having C4U check for at least one change, two, three, and so on (we stopped counting at 80-something). You can also set C4U to auto-check sites. Additionally, the program will open your target site within its own window, or in your browser (Internet Explorer 3.01 or later, Netscape 3.0 or later). eLOL* Not getting enough jokes forwarded to you in email from your friends? eLOL (Electronic Laugh Out Loud) is a free tray-based app that delivers text, graphics, audio, and video jokes to you daily from the Internet. You can configure what types of jokes, how many, and what time they should be delivered. (Make sure you check the "clean, politically correct jokes" option if you don't want to get offensive material.) You can rate the jokes that are sent to you, as well as see how many people read the joke and the average "funniness rating." April 6, Thursday- 4:03 pm CST- New Downloads: Mail Watcher* will check your mail, tell you when messages arrive, and even build a sender blocking list to shortstop those spammers. Keeping up with the mail is a snap with this free winner. This neat little program sits in the system tray and checks your mail on multiple POP3 mail servers at the interval you select. When new mail arrives, you get an optional voice notice and a flashing tray icon. If you choose, you can let Mail Watcher launch your email client, or you can simply scan the mailbox list to see what's waiting. Right-click on a message to add the sender to the blocked list if you don't want anymore spam from that source. You can view the blocked sender list to edit the entries. A brief tabbed help file explains the features. NoteTab Light* is a friendly, free text editor that puts Windows' Notepad to shame. It can open several large documents at once, each in its own tabbed window. It offers a clean, highly customizable interface, complete with tool and status bars. The often-imitated Editor Clipbook tool lets you easily insert any kind of boilerplate text (such as acronyms, HTML tags, glossaries, and "smilies") into your documents. NoteTab Light is Internet-friendly, too -- it can open links or view documents directly in your Web browser. Conversion functions include stripping HTML tags, converting text to HTML, sorting lines, and changing case. You'll also find search-and-replace, calculation of mathematical expressions, text macros, full font support, shortcut menus, and the ability to easily reopen favorite files and folders. This free "Light" edition is nearly identical to NoteTab Standard. However, you can try all of the standard version's features (such as Clipbars and Editable Outline files) for 30 days. April 5, Wednesday- 3:53 pm CST- Netscape Navigator 6 Preview 1 released. New Downloads: Blowfish Advanced CS* is a general-purpose security program you can use to keep sensitive data from getting into the wrong hands. It is primarily a file encryption utility, and offers a host of available options and additional tools. The familiar Explorer-style interface allows you to browse for one or more files to apply one of several available encryption algorithms, including Triple DES and Blowfish. You can choose to maintain file attributes and time/date stamps, overwrite existing files, append encrypted file names with an additional file extension, write-protect encrypted files, and more. You can also use Blowfish Advanced CS to perform secue file wipes and wipe free disk space. Other features include password-protection and a configurable favorite paths menu. Although it doesn't bring anything earth-shattering to the table, Blowfish Advanced CS is attractive, highly configurable, and has a well-designed interface that's very easy to negotiate. ThirdVoice 2000 is a free (thanks to banner ads) tool with several nice features that can enhance your Web browsing. It makes its presence known as a system tray icon, a new toolbar in Internet Explorer, and a window that docks to the side of IE. Each time you load a new Web page, ThirdVoice quickly scans it and underlines words or phrases that have Websites associated with them and creates active links. Results are shown in the ThirdVoice docked window. The program also lets you express opinions through inline notes on any Web page and read messages posted by other ThirdVoice users. In addition, you may create an open group for others to join, send a private note to have a confidential discussion, and access a built-in search function. Once the program is installed, you'll need to sign up for your free ThirdVoice account. Note: This is a beta version and could be buggy and/or unstable. The developer welcomes your comments. Once installed, Crescendo operates transparently whenever you encounter MIDI background music or open a MIDI directly from a site. The compact Crescendo control panel lets you adjust the volume and balance, rewind and fast-forward, and looping. It also displays a counter and playlist and lets you save MIDIs to your hard disk. One of the more innovative chat programs available, this free program is definitely worth a try. Converse using text or voice (you'll need a microphone), or have a private conversation using text or voice. If you like a particular Website and want to post a note for your friends to read when they get there, you can do that too by using site-specific Info Centers. Besides talking to each other, Website visitors can talk to Website personnel, live and in person. Users can also make free voice calls to friends, family or colleagues worldwide. NetMonitor* is a system-tray application that monitors your Internet connection. It shows kilobytes received and sent and graphically represents your transfer rate in real time. It also features a keep-alive function that prevents your ISP from pulling the plug on you for inactivity, and allows you to conduct a simple test to determine your true connection speed. You can have NetMonitor load automatically with Windows, and synchronize your PC clock at startup. Other features include local IP address display, IP address resolution, and simple Whois and TraceRoute functions. Proxy server support and changable skins round out this fine utility.
