Norton
Antivirus 2002
Van T. Do --TekWarrior.com©--
After Norton Antivirus 2001 failed
my previous benchmark. I had a lot to expect from the update of
the biggest antivirus company in the world. Could such a large
company move through the complicated world of security quick enough?
I was delightfully surprised to find that Norton has shored up
its internet protection. Improving its e-mail scanning, and now
has script protection, which I have found extremely useful. Like
always, Norton will always have that clean interface that you
can't find anywhere else. A great antivirus for the average consumer.
With improved protection over its predecesor. If there is one
problem this time, it has to do with the Live Update feature.
My Norton Internet Security update license expires in about a
month, but everytime I use Live Update to update my virus definitions,
it always pops up the form to renew my license. It seems like
one or two times is sufficient, but it shows up all the time!!!
And its not exactly a fast process either.

Like most antiviruses
NAV 2002 has on-demand, and automatic protection. Norton's Auto-Protect
feature is one of the most resource efficient I have seen (a miracle
if you look at all the other products from Norton that are pretty
bloated). Auto-Protect utilizes the Blood-Hound technology,
which is a fairly good heuristic engine to detect those nasty
new viruses & trojans. Norton has been ranked with the 100%
Virus Protection award for a number of months.
NAV 2002 now supports
AOL, so those millions of users are in luck.
Live Update: Virus
Definitions sizes usually vary from 100k-200k.
Conclusion: Norton
has redeemed itself for the miserable performance in the benchmark,
despite the little things, its perfect for average users. Though
I like Kaspersky's updates better that are about a tenth of Norton's
size, Norton's is fairly decent. Once Kaspersky releases its new
antivirus, you will again see a pounding benchmark, and it is then,
that we will see how Norton 2002's engine racks up. Until then,
Norton has widened the gap on the cumbersome McAfee.
Protection: Currently Unbenchmarked
Final Notes: Price: $25-35 - Includes one year subscription
to Virus Def update through LiveUpdate. Unlimited updates after
subscription, but manually updates that are around 2-3 mbs.
