8-9-00- NETSCAPE FLAW REVEALS YOUR DATA
A flaw affecting most versions
of Netscape allows malicious Web sites to peek at victims' hard
drives. Dubbed "Brown Orifice," alluding to the infamous "Back Orifice"
computer vandal tool, the Netscape flaw lies in four Java components.
These Java components can be tricked into turning a standard PC
into a Web server. The new "Web server" can then be tricked into
displaying the contents of its hard drive. The flaw is only activated
when a victim goes to a malicious URL. But the flaw does not allow
anyone else to manipulate or destroy the victim's hard drive. The
flaw does not affect Internet Explorer or the Mozilla browser. In
the meanwhile, Netscape users can protect themselves by disabling

OUTLOOK BUG EXPOSES
YOUR PC A South American security research team
has discovered a flaw in the Microsoft Outlook email program that
allows vandals to take control of computers simply by sending a
single email. Until now, email recipients had to open an attachment
or at least view a specially formed message to be attacked. Now
a machine is targeted as soon as it begins to download the message,
triggering the execution of code contained in the header. Microsoft
acknowledges the flaw and admits that the vulnerability can affect
even a user who installs Outlook Security Update and uses the Security
Zones feature. The only defense against the bug is to install the
Microsoft patch, soon to be available on the Microsoft.com security
site. Users with the SP 1 of OutLook 5.01, or have IE 5.5 are not
vulnerable. Corporate versions of Outlook are also not affected.
